The US Economic Policy and the Prospect of Sino-US Economic and Trade Relations

Abstract: For a long time, the US economic and trade policy toward China has always been the core concern of Donald Trump's foreign policy. To accurately determine the direction and possible development trajectory of Trump's future economic and trade policy toward China is relevant to the direction of China's economic development in the next four years and even a longer period of time. On the whole, Trump will not change his policy of the US "decoupling" from China, but his unilateral policy, while impacting China-US trade relations, also objectively creates new international development space for Chinese enterprises. The economic complementarity between China and the US determines the long-term competition and cooperation between the two countries. China should remain focused and stay calm, and seek cooperation through competition; formulate targeted countermeasures to effectively resolve external shocks; vigorously develop economic and trade ties with the EU, ASEAN, Latin America and African economies, and safeguard the multilateral trading system; align with high-standard international economic and trade rules, and actively participate in the formulation of international rules, regulations and standards; and actively foster domestic consumption market, promote scientific and technological innovation and industrial upgrading, enhance the independent and controllable capabilities of the domestic industrial chain, and inject more certainty into China-US relations and the world economy.
