Per capita basis, you can look at the overall quality of life, which is measured by a combination of different economic indicators such as GDP per capita (PPP), HDI ( Human Development Index) which covers life expectancy, access to quality education, and healthcare.

Out of 55 countries, 15 African countries are more developed than India ( per capita basis).

Equatorial Guinea, Seychelles, Mauritius, Gabon, Botswana, Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Namibia, Swaziland, Libya, Morocco, Cape Verde, and *Angola or Republic of Congo*.

First let me talk about wealth. Africa has over 50 countries, out of which only 14 are wealthier than India:

South Africa has wealth due to diamond and Europeans, but the native are in equally bad state as rest of Africa. North Africa has wealth from oil reserves.

Is India a better country than South Africa?

Difficult to state which one is better as both have pretty poor aspects towards them.

For starters India has a much higher poverty rate than South Africa, but they have a higher growth rate than us.
