The Conference Series of XMAS is well-known by many marine scientists around the world。 The XMAS conferences not only served as a platform for knowledge exchange, but also fostered research collaborations at both national and international levels。”

Gray Williams

“SWIMS and MEL have had a long-term collaboration; especially of postgraduate exchange through UCAS。 The building of D-SMART, which is a sister laboratory to SWIMS, has further opened opportunities for exchange which we plan to capitalize on in the future; with SWIMS more coastal based nearshore research integrating with MELs large scale oceanographic research。 I think many people have different views on this, and many of these views are quite narrow (related to their personal interests/fields)。 I think what is key is that it should be a vision that people from different backgrounds can agree on and then work together towards this goal。 Removing or managing potential conflicts between different groups is the only effective way to achieve this goal and I believe this is one of the main goals of Coastal-SOS which is why I think this is a very important and innovative project。”

Annalisa Bracco

“I‘ve been very pleased to be involved in the organization of the XMAS series。 It’s a great opportunity to shape a great conference in Oceanography, while making the program in Ocean Science and Engineering visible and known。 I‘ll be presenting two talks at the conference。 I’ll chair a session on ecosystem connectivity in the ocean, which is deeply related to both my present and future research, and I‘ll present recent work on the Overturning Circulation in the Labrador Sea and how sub-mesoscale turbulence impacts such a global scale climatic phenomenon。”

Cindy Lee

“Each member of the committee recommended names of possible speakers。 We discussed each speaker and their strengths and weaknesses。 Then we voted on the entire list and those who got the most votes were chosen to speak。 In my list, it was easy to pick scientists doing excellent and interesting work, but I also thought about their speaking ability。 Not every great scientist is a great speaker。”

“The primary goal for sessions that I proposed or co-proposed was to promote DGO(编者注:厦门大学海洋与地球学院地质海洋学系)。 We decided on the topic among the co-conveners based on what research we were going at the time。 The Taiwan-Strait Source-to-Sink research team have been using interdisciplinary approach to study source-to-sink processes and records。 We focus on the coupling between physical processes and biogeochemical signals of suspended particles and sediment deposits。 We realized that unless we use interdisciplinary approach to investigate S2S-related science, we would be just like ‘blind men feeling the elephant’ seeing only trees not the forest。”
