  What's new in Paris 2011

The latest places to stay, eat and drink in Paris, plus some must-see events for your diary: Yolanda Zappatera looks at the city in 2011.

  Where to stay

  Royal Monceau Raffles

A terrific location and Philippe Starck touches (such as the Fumée Rouge, with cigar safety deposit boxes), make this the new luxury hotel of choice, particularly for art lovers, who get their very own art concierge. Enjoy a dip in the city’s biggest indoor hotel pool。

  37 Avenue Hoche, 8th (+33 1 42 99 88 00, ). Doubles 730-930.

  Shangri-La Paris

The Asian Shangri-La group has spent four years restoring the former residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte to create a high-end hotel. Two more Asian-backed luxury hotels, the Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula, will be opening this year and in 2012 respectively。

  10 Avenue d’Iéna, 16th (+33 1 53 67 19 98, ). Doubles 750-1,265.

  St Christopher’s Inn

Shoestring travellers will love this hostel in a former boat hangar on the Canal de l’Ourcq. Decor is ‘funky sailor’s cabin’, with ’50s-inspired nautical furniture, but best of all is the chance to hang out with locals, who flock to the canalside setting, good brasserie and some of the cheapest drinks in town。

  Hôtel Gabriel

Paris’s first ‘detox hotel’ is a shrine to quality R&R, with a chrome mini-bar that unfolds from inside a white cupboard, and the NightCove, which emits sounds and light to stimulate melatonin production。

  Eating and drinking

  1 Place Vendôme

With young chef Nicolas Rucheto concocting menus from what the markets have to offer, this grand hotel restaurant has come over all modish. The ‘oceán’ menu boasts a john dory stew with Tio Pepe emulsion; ‘terre’-lovers can try Simmental beef with saltire。

  1 Place Vendôme, 1st (+ 33 1 55 04 55 60, ). Set lunch 45.

  Le Chateaubriand

Self-taught Basque chef Iñaki Aizpitarte runs this stylish bistro in a democratic manner – it’s a five-course prix-fixe menu with no choices, but when food is as good as Aizpitarte’s, choice isn’t really an issue。

  Frenchie

Grégory Lemarchand honed his craft with Jamie Oliver before opening this bistro next to the market of Rue Montorgueil, an instant hit thanks to his boldly flavoured dishes。

  Derrière

Mourad Mazouz, the man behind Momo and Sketch, has another winner in this restaurant in the same Marais street as his bar Andy Whaloo. The cluttered-chic look mixes contemporary and antique, and attracts a young, hip crowd。

  O Château

What began as Olivier Magny’s small wine-tasting business has found a permanent home in this 250sq m Montorgeuil space; 40 wines are available by the glass。

  52, Rue de l’Arbre Sec, 1st (+33 1 44 73 97 80, )。

  Rouge Passion

Bright upstarts Anne and Sébastien seem determined to make their mark on the Paris bar scene with a winning list of wines from just 3 a glass, freeassiettes apéros (peanuts, tapenade) and vintage chic decor。

  Cultural spaces

  Collège des Bernardins

One of Paris’s biggest medieval religious buildings has opened a new non-religious arts section, holding exhibitions, films and concerts。

  20 Rue de Poissy, 5th (+33 1 53 10 74 44, )。
